			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align: left;">I have written before in the <a href="http://tweenteacher.com/2009/01/12/sesame-street-word-on-the-street/">past</a> on various blog sites and networks about the <a href="http://tweenteacher.com/2009/08/12/arne-duncan-and-his-distance-learning-missive/">vital equation</a> that must exist in order for a student not to fail in our schools:</p>
<p><strong>Family + Student + School + Policymakers/Voters = Student Achievement</strong></p>
<p>Each variable is co-dependent on the other.  Each link in the chain must do its part, pulling its weight for the goal to be achieved.  To tackle this polynomial equation takes deconstructing its parts.  Therefore, much like a <a href="http://www.bravotv.com/top-chef/blogs/tom-colicchio/deconstruction-junction-what-s-your-function">Top Chef</a> contestant deconstructs a grilled cheese sandwich to analyze its ingredients, I am going to break down our education equation into parts and analyze what each must contribute for a student to succeed.</p>
<p>So I’ve posted three articles simultaneously, a webquest of sorts through my blogs, covering the following:</p>
<ul>
<li>At <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/heather-wolpertgawron/the-education-of-student-_b_789565.html">The Huffington Post,</a> you’ll find my take on what the family and home life must contribute to the equation.</li>
<li>At The George Lucas Educational Foundation’s <a href="http://www.edutopia.org/blog/student-responsibility-academic-success-heather-wolpert-gawron">Edutopia</a> site, I’ve written on what the student must bring to the table.</li>
<li>Here, you can read about the responsibilities of the schools, specifically those of the teachers.</li>
</ul>
<p style="text-align: left;">Stop by each site and look at each of the variables.  For without any of them, the equation will undoubtedly fail.</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>The Teacher’s Responsibilities</strong></p>
<p>What’s rough about defining a teachers’ necessary contribution to the equation is that it has become an evolving job description, with obligations added to our plates without appropriate increase in compensation or the necessary ongoing training.  Nevertheless, there are still responsibilities which make up the foundation of our profession and ones that we must be willing to adopt as the world around us changes if we are to really hold our own in the equation of student success.</p>
<p><strong>1. </strong>Be experts at our content.  This means continuing to invest in updating our knowledge.</p>
<p><strong>2. </strong>Be experts in communicating our content.  A good math teacher not only knows math, but can transmit their knowledge to students in a way that the clientele understand.  A good history teacher not only appreciates the past, but can pass on their passion in a way that makes students appreciate it too.</p>
<p><strong>3. </strong>Be up to date on skills students will need to know for their future.  I’ve written about this in the past.  Teachers must find ways to teach forwards, to teach in a way that helps prepare students for their future, and that often means moving beyond the methods in which we ourselves were taught.</p>
<p><strong>4. </strong>Collaborate and model collaboration, for the future world in which they will live will not be an isolated one.  It will be a global community that requires adults to work together in ways we cannot begin to predict.  Cut the losses that go hand-in-hand with our inability to see the future, and teach an openness to collaboration.</p>
<p><strong>5. </strong>Be a role model.  Yes, you signed up for that.</p>
<p><strong>6. </strong>Communicate with the student and the family in multiple ways, in methods that work for them and for you.  You have email but they don’t?  Find a way.  You have given a paper to the student and it never reached home?  Call until you reach someone or wait at the curb for an inescapable meeting at drop-off.</p>
<p><strong>7. </strong>Continue being a student yourself, and model being a lifelong learner.</p>
<p><strong>8. </strong>Make lessons applicable.  Don’t be a part of the disconnect between school life what real life.  Take time to explain the relationship and why what kids are learning now is important later on.</p>
<p><strong>9. </strong>Be willing to adapt.  We are in the business of teaching the group that is before us at any given year, and as times change, so must our methods and lessons.</p>
<p><strong>10. </strong>Enjoy your job and your clientele.  The minute you find yourself not looking forward to spending your day with those kids, find another profession.</p>
<p>For some teachers, this may seem obvious.  For others it may be more than you bargained for when you signed up for teaching.  But it’s the basic fundamentals of what we need to do if we are to keep up our end of the equation.  And I’ll be honest; I think we should be evaluated on how we accomplish these steps.  We should be held accountable for how we uphold our end of the social bargain.  Even though I believe teachers and schools can’t be held accountable for other variable’s failures, we cannot allow that discrepancy to dictate our own contributions and efforts.</p>
<p><strong>The Final Variable in the Equation of Success</strong></p>
<p>Of course, the last vital variable is what we all, the voters and the policymakers who work for us, must do for education to succeed.</p>
<p>It’s important enough that I want to end each of my three posts with this challenge: make education a priority in the voting booths and the campaigns.  Retired baby boomers can’t dismiss educational issues as no longer their problem to solve.   Younger families coming up through the system can’t cut-and run from our public schools in their indecision of how to educate their own children.  The problems that plague some of our schools belong to us all.</p>
<p>Public schools are a miracle of this country.  The mission, to educate all for free, is one that anyone on any side of the political fence should be fighting for as a top priority.  But it’s up to voters to send the message that it is important, and its up to policymakers to do the right thing despite party politics and lobbyists.</p>
<p>Cutting education will only cut the future of this country, and that hurts us all.  With every vote that does not pass and with every “nay” on the floor, our voters and policymakers condemn our system to further failure.</p>
<p>The equation of student success isn’t about who is to blame.  Rather, it forces us to ask the question: how can each variable that involves us all, better do its part?</p>
<p>In regards to what teachers can do to contribute to the equation, what would you add to this Top 10 list to avoid student failure?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So I recited the book and showed the movie trailer to the students on my Interactive Whiteboard, just as I mused about in my last <a href="http://tweenteacher.com/2009/03/27/movie-trailer-review-where-the-wild-things-are/">post</a>.  From there, I read an old version of the &#8220;<a href="http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0124.html#halliwell">Three Little Pigs</a>&#8221; and asked my students to formulate questions or plot points to fill in the gaps in character development, narrative, background, etc, muck like what Spike Jonze seems to have done in his adaptation.  <a href="http://tweenteacher.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/pigs.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-304" title="pigs" src="http://tweenteacher.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/pigs-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a></p>
<p>So I want to share some of the awesome questions my 7th graders developed to help them fill in the story gaps:</p>
<p><em>1.     If the mother pig didn&#8217;t have the &#8220;means&#8221; to have so many kids, why did she have three?             </em></p>
<p><em>2.     Why did the three pigs go their separate ways?  How was their relationship if they wouldn&#8217;t stay together?</em></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>I believe a classroom library is the heartbeat of a teacher&#8217;s environment.  It is the window into their own personality, and it reflects the importance of literacy in the classroom.  I believe every teacher, no matter the subject taught, should have one.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span> Access to books should be thought about with the same differentiated approach as any other lesson, assessment, or activity.  It seems to me that there are four kinds of library-learners:<br />

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>1. THE BRASH BIBLIOPHILE:  These are students who are well versed in the language of book choice and seek out what they want, avidly asking questions or using learned or inherent strategies to find the book that will make them sigh into their bed with a flashlight in hand.  They will find their way to their local bookstore by any means necessary, and look through the stacks until their parents pull them away.  </span></p>

It&#8217;s an advice list on how to encourage respect, and, if necessary, how to demand it as a means to make sure you aren&#8217;t being taken for granted. </em></div>

<div style="text-align: justify; "><em>Let&#8217;s face it, if you are feeling appreciated, you will be happier in this difficult job. Consequently, your students will be happier, and quite frankly, if they are happier, they will be more successful.  After all, an unhappy teacher&#8217;s room has the smog of misery in it, and for a student, it hovers like a stench that affects their own victories.  And while it benefits a school to keep its teachers happy, it is a teacher&#8217;s responsibility to demand those things that make this challenging job better than tolerable.</em></div>
<div style="text-align: justify; "><em>I think that finding those tricks or strategies to keep in your pocket is important in any career; but in education you need them even more so. Otherwise, the day-to-day duties of the job will eventually grind your enthusiasm to a halt and it won&#8217;t just be you who is affected, your students will be affected as well.</em></div>

Another period went up 37%.  Even my Honors class went from 81% Advanced to 97% Advanced, with only 1 student found in the Proficient category.  So why don&#8217;t I believe that my metal should be judged on test scores?  Because I have one class, my 7th Grade ELA class that went down; and through careful reflection I&#8217;ve been analyzing why.</span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>OK, you know when you get a new puppy and you love it and you couldn&#8217;t live without it and then you find out it has hip dysplasia?  </p>
<p>That&#8217;s a little of what my relationship is like with my new Interactive Whiteboard.</p>
<p>I wouldn&#8217;t give it up for the world.  I have come to depend on the tools it provides me.  I love it.</p>
<p>But I am consistently re-calibrating, re-starting, re-booting, and it so far won&#8217;t read the kids remotes.  I have come to intimately know the board representative.  We have each other&#8217;s cell phone numbers and my husband is starting to raise an eyebrow.  I have also had tremendous support from our Director of Technology and the few other district pilot teachers.   </p>
<p>But the bottom line is that the board has become a daily joy even while I have daily frustrations.  And like that puppy that you automatically fall in love with because of the joy it brings you the minute it comes into your room, I am going to do everything I can to make it work.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>I was reading this great article from S<a href="http://www.slate.com/id/2209526/?from=rss"><span>late Magazine about the cheese that is Billy Joel</span></a>.  And I thought back to many a car trip singing his &#8220;Themes from an Italian Restaurant.&#8221;  I also remembered just how many times I&#8217;d fast-forwarded through some of his more heavy-handed, political-themed songs set to rapid rhyme scheme.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>I&#8217;ll even one-up Slate&#8217;s insolent trashing of the Piano Man. I&#8217;ll go so far as to say I&#8217;m not an Elton John fan. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Don&#8217;t freak.  I&#8217;m allowed.  Remember, this is my website.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>But this got me thinking about opinions, criticism, persuasion, and choice, and their place in the classroom.  </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>In a collaborative classroom, students are not only given choice, they are given the ability to disagree with grace, with each other, and even with (dare I say) the teacher.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>I&#8217;m still getting crazy responses to my <a href="http://tweenteacher.com/2008/09/26/book-review-breaking-dawn-cliff-notes-of-the-stephanie-meyers-series/"><span>Breaking Dawn Book review</span></a>.  I can&#8217;t tell you how many comments I&#8217;ve deleted with X-rated words or threats.  It&#8217;s not that I&#8217;m looking over my shoulder, but if the majority of these comments are from tweens, there&#8217;s clearly a lesson not being taught to these kids.  How does one disagree appropriately?  Yes, I slammed the book.  But the theme of the post is to Discuss over Censor.  They just couldn&#8217;t see it through our disagreement.   </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Students should be allowed to choose in a classroom.  It&#8217;s a true form of differentiation.  Choice could be given on reading texts, assessments, projects, partnerships, etc&#8230;But with choice, also comes opinion, hand-in-hand.  And with opinion comes disagreement.  </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>This shouldn&#8217;t be scary; it should be embraced.  Choice is empowering for a student.  But a teacher must teach how to disagree appropriately, how to criticize appropriately, and how to move on from there.  </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>It is a new form of pre-teaching.  There are skills involved in teaching Reaching a Consensus.  There are skills involved in Criticism Etiquette.  These are worthwhile &#8211; arguably more so than the skills involved in How to Bubble Accurately.  </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>These are lessons that would not only be reflected in blog comments, but in how our students, as adults, would make choices, form opinions, and have disagreements in the world.</span></p>
